Movies And TV Shows I’ve Watched In April (Reviews)

It’s time to share my monthly movie and show reviews for the month of April. Here are the shows that I will be reviewing this month: Who Killed Sara?, Them, and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. And here are the movies I will be reviewing this month: What Lies Below, New Year, New You; Concrete Cowboy, Thunder Force, Down, Treehouse, Mortal Kombat (1995), Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Mortal Kombat (2021), Sound Of Metal, and The Trial Of The Chicago 7. TV Shows

Who Killed Sara? – Season 1 (2021) – Rating: 5/5

Who killed Sara ? That’s the question viewers and the characters on the show wants to know. The cast was great and so were the performances. Some of the members of the Lazcano family have done some horrible things, so I was rooting for Alex to get his revenge on the family that betrayed him. The plot is so intriguing and it seems like every episode unveiled things we didn’t know in the show. This series really kept me hooked. There are also a lot of weird and bad things that occur in the series. I’m sure we all love a good cliffhanger, and this show does not hold back on them, especially during the last episode; I was not expecting that ending. I’m so ready for season 2. Who Killed Sara? is a compelling, binge worthy and suspenseful murder mystery series.

Them – Season 1 (2021) – Rating: 3/5

I did not know what to expect while watching Them, besides it being a horror based show. The cast gave amazing performances, especially the Emory family. The cinematography and shots were beautifully filmed. The soundtrack was great for the scenes it accompanied and the music at times was eerie, which fit the show’s theme. The show may be uncomfortable to watch with its racial acts, slurs and violence; Also be aware of Episode 5 (Cat In The Bag). The show is creepy, bold, and terrifying. I didn’t love the show, but it kept me interested with what was going on with the Emory family. I’m curious to see how next season will go.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (2021) – Rating: 5/5

What I loved about the show/this season is how we got a glimpse into how both Sam and Bucky are feeling post blip and after Steve is gone. We also get to see the relationship of these two. The show’s tackling of social issues such as racism and being that these issues are relevant in today’s time, it was great to add in the show. We see some of Sam’s family life and how he feels about the possibility of being a black Captain America. We also see Bucky’s going to therapy wanting to make amends for his past as The Winter Soldier and trying to live a somewhat normal life. The show brings us old and new characters with villains and their agendas. TFATWS has heart, humor, action and adventure.

What Lies Below (2020) – Rating: 2.5/5

I didn’t know what to expect when I was watching this film besides the fact that there would be something wrong with Libby’s mom new boyfriend (John). And throughout the movie, we get some hints as to why Libby thinks something is going on with him. The acting was decent and the pace of the movie was nice. The plot of the movie kept me engaged. Obviously there’s something wrong with John, and as the movie went on, I had a hunch on what that could be. Some scenes in the movie I questioned because they were weird and creepy. And the film’s ending I was not a fan of. I still have questions about what happened in the film and why. This movie isn’t perfect, but I do think it’s entertaining and worth checking out especially if you’re into thrillers.

New Year, New You (2018) – Rating: 4/5

So Hulu’s Into The Dark horror anthology series does it again and this time the holiday focus is on New Year’s Eve. The movie’s plot was definitely interesting. The cast was great and so were the performances. You see flashbacks of a childhood incident that happened with the girls, which contributes to the tension that is currently amongst them. And in each scene I wasn’t sure what to expect. This film highlighted on friendship and the social media culture, which were major themes in the movie. New Year, New You took surprising turns, kept me in suspense, and is intense at times.

Concrete Cowboy (2021) – Rating: 4/5

Concrete Cowboy is a drama movie that gives off a serious tone and at times the movie made me smile and even laugh at some scenes thanks to the character Paris. The performances were strong. You felt the chemistry amongst the cast and the characters they played. Also how cool is it that some of the real Fletcher Street riders star in this film. You have this real community of black urban cowboys/cowgirls and in some way through this movie we get to see part of their story. I also enjoyed seeing Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin characters’ relationship grow in the film. Concrete Cowboy is inspiring, and has heart.

Thunder Force (2021) – Rating: 3/5

I enjoyed watching this movie and I thought the cast did a good job. Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer had great chemistry and I thought their characters balanced each other out, being that their personalities are quite the opposite. This is a comedy movie and like most comedies, sometimes you don’t need or have to take these films serious. I thought the jokes were funny and were good for the moments that required them. Jason Bateman as The Crab is so funny, he was really great in this role, and his scenes were my favorite. Him and Melissa McCarthy were hilarious together. I couldn’t help but laugh. Thunder Force is funny, entertaining, and is a film to sit back and enjoy.

Down (2019) – Rating: 3.5/5

The holiday theme for this movie/episode was Valentine’s Day. And I didn’t know what two expect. Two workers that are working late, are the only ones in the building and they get stuck on an elevator together, after it breaks down and I’ll let you guess how it goes from there. The way the movie took a turn was a surprise. I knew something was wrong, but I just didn’t know what. Even though the cast was small, the acting was decent and it was suspenseful. To me the whole situation with the movie is terrifying, because it could happen.

Treehouse (2019) – Rating: 3.5/5

The monthly holiday theme for this movie is International Women’s Day mixed with the #MeToo and Times Up movement. A jerkish celebrity chef (Peter) goes to his family’s vacation home for the weekend to hang out with his sister, but it turns into a nightmare for him after being hospitable with some ladies staying nearby. Treehouse threw a couple of surprises at me while watching it. Treehouse is one of those movies that reminds you that sexual misconduct is never okay, no matter who you are. And Peter learned his lesson in a scary but seemingly effective way. I enjoyed the pop culture references throughout the movie about films like Psycho to The Witch, I smiled upon hearing them. Also tune in for the twist at the end.

Mortal Kombat (1995) – Rating: 3/5

So this movie isn’t horrible. I actually kind of enjoyed it. Let’s get into what was good about the film: The acting was okay, the soundtrack was enjoyable ( I mean this movie gave us that iconic Mortal Kombat theme song), and the fights were well choreographed. The bad: The obvious thing for me was the special effects and CGI lol. I couldn’t help but laugh at how horrible they looked. This movie also doesn’t give you the brutal fatalities we all know from the games, but we get something slightly similar to them lol. Mortal Kombat is silly at times, but it’s fun, and a decent adaptation of the video game and I think it’s worth a watch.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) – Rating: 2/5

Okay so I didn’t like this movie as much I liked the first Mortal Kombat film. They changed the actors that played Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Raiden in the first film. Even though the new actors weren’t bad, it was just unexpected lol. It was nice seeing new Mortal Kombat characters in this film. And the special effects and CGI was still looking crazy and bad. They are very few details that I remember about this movie. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation isn’t as memorable and fun as the first one, but if you’re curious to watch it then check it out.

Mortal Kombat (2021) – Rating: 4.5/5

I was so excited to watch Mortal Kombat, I saw it three times since it’s release. I’ve seen the previous two movies from the 90s and to me this movie is the best Mortal Kombat film adaptation. The cast was just really great and they portrayed their characters very well. While everyone’s performances I enjoyed, There are a few standouts and my favorite is Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. He’s cold, scary, and menacing, this role was definitely meant for Joe Taslim, he is Sub-Zero. Also Kano is hilarious in this movie. The fight scenes are beautiful and well choreographed. I couldn’t take my eyes off of those scenes. The fatalities are bloody, brutal and exactly what they should be. And the video game references I enjoyed as well. Mortal Kombat is fun, exciting, entertaining and one of the best video game adaptations I’ve seen. I really enjoyed this film, and I cannot wait for the sequels ! Also I’m thinking about doing a blog post on my top ten characters from the film.

Sound Of Metal (2020) – Rating: 4/5

What I enjoyed most about the film was the acting. It was authentic and really great. Yes the entire cast did a fantastic job, but I wanted to highlight Riz Ahmed’s stellar performance. Riz plays a heavy metal drummer named Ruben who hearing rapidly declines, and we see how he deals with that throughout the film, including his stay at the community where they are assisting him. The community do not believe that deafness is a handicap and that’s something that they wanted to show Ruben. It highlighted his journey on whether or not he will accept his deafness. Sound of Metal is realistic, touching, and inspiring.

The Trial Of The Chicago 7 (2020) – Rating: 4/5

I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. The cast did a fantastic job and while they all were great I wanted to highlight two performances. Those two being Sacha Baron Cohen who steals the show with his well acted and hilarious courtroom performance as Abbie Hoffman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who gives a memorable performance playing Black Panther co-founder, Bobby Seale.  They played their characters so well and it was a delight to see these two in their roles. Also the judge was the worst. This courtroom drama is entertaining, relevant, has great writing, and great acting.
